In collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Polish Cultural Institute, Tate Britain is showing a group of works by Polish Symbolist artists alongside paintings by their British contemporaries exploring the relationship between the two schools around 1900. The display features a selection of works that have been lent from public and private collections in Poland.
This is the first time there has been an exhibition on the subject of Polish art at Tate and the display launches the Polska!Year in the UK. Artists include Edward Burne-Jones, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Alfred Gilbert, Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Witold Wojtkiewicz and Jacek Malczewski.

Wystawa prac polskich artystów "Symbolism in Poland and Britain" będzie jednym z pierwszych wydarzeń Roku Polskiego w Wielkiej Brytanii.
To bezprecedensowe wydarzenie – najważniejsza instytucja brytyjskiej sztuki stanie się punktem odniesienia dla naszych artystów. Wystawa czynna będzie od 14 marca do 21 czerwca. Obrazy Malczewskiego, Wyspiańskiego, Sichulskiego, Wojtkiewicza, Mehoffera i Pankiewicza zostaną pokazane w kontekście brytyjskiego symbolizmu – czytamy w „Rzeczpospolitej”. Zaakcentowane zostaną również związki między malarstwem polskim i brytyjskim około roku 1900.
Najważniejszą pracą pokazu będzie "Apollo" Wyspiańskiego z 1904 roku. Postać tego artysty jest dla tej wystawy szczególna – w jego twórczości znajdziemy wiele motywów korespondujących ze sztuką brytyjską (Rachelę w "Weselu" porównał do obrazów jednego z najważniejszych prerafaelitów, Burne-Jonesa), a "Apollo" wydaje się te wątki kumulować.
Celem wystawy nie będzie jednak uwypuklenie podobieństw, ale pokazanie dialogu artystów. Położono nacisk na pokrewieństwa z obrazami Brytyjczyków, "wskazując na wątki wizjonerskie, poetyckie czy fantastyczne".
